Presented by Commonwealth Club at Streaming Arts

Oct 29, 2020

It’s natural to feel protective of our favorite movies—they can inform the way we see the world, introduce us to complex themes, or remind us of a simpler time (like before we knew what racism and sexism were). Writer Lindy West argues, however, that liking a movie doesn’t always mean that it’s actually good. In her new book Shit, Actually: The Definitive, 100% Objective Guide to Modern Cinema, West uses her trademark wit to test the durability of 23 iconic movies and ask herself the important question: “How’d they hold up?” Join West as she returns to INFORUM to discuss the joys and challenges of re-watching your favorite pieces of cinema and to teach us how to be critical of the trash we love. This program is free, though we invite you to make a donation during registration; this is an online-only program, and you must pre-register for a link to the…

Presented by Copperfield's Books at Streaming Arts

Nov 05, 2020

Featured Book: Deep Delta Justice In 1966 in a small town in Louisiana, a 19-year-old black man named Gary Duncan pulled his car off the road to stop a fight. Duncan was arrested a few minutes later for the crime of putting his hand on the arm of a white child. Rather than accepting his fate, Duncan found Richard Sobol, a brilliant, 29-year-old lawyer from New York who was the only white attorney at "the most radical law firm" in New Orleans. Against them stood one of the most powerful white supremacists in the South, a man called simply "The Judge." In this powerful work of character-driven history, journalist Matthew Van Meter vividly brings alive how a seemingly minor incident brought massive, systemic change to the criminal justice system. Using first-person interviews, in-depth research and a deep knowledge of the law, Van Meter shows how Gary Duncan's insistence on seeking…

Jun 05, 2020 - Jan 31, 2021

In response to the extraordinary events gripping our country, Music Director Alasdair Neale wondered what we could do as an arts organization that would be a meaningful and useful expression. He found it in our archives. In January of 2014, the Symphony performed Joseph Schwanter's moving and powerful New Morning for the World with Noah Griffin as the narrator. The piece was composed as a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr and features three musical sections, each interspersed with texts from multiple King speeches and writings. In this video program, Alasdair asks for Noah's perspective and insight regarding the piece, King's words, and how they fit into the context of today. Noah draws upon his academic background in history, and his vast range of experience in government, politics, media, and journalism to share his ultimately optimistic thoughts about where we are as a country. The video concludes with a powerful audio of the Symphony's…

Abrams's song went on to become an international hit. Through our digital exhibit, you will learn about the song's incredible history and its lasting cultural impact through clippings, photographs, correspondence and video. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of journalist, melophile and longtime Mill Valley resident Leonard Anderson's Oral History interview with Rita Abrams, which is part of the History Room's growing Oral History Collection.

Mar 19, 2020 - Jan 31, 2021

The Social Distancing Festival is an online artist’s community made to celebrate and showcase the work of the many artists around the world who have been affected by the need for social distancing that has come about due to the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Personally, a production of a new musical of mine was cancelled on March 13, 2020. Yeah, Friday the 13th. Like, come on right? It’s such a weird mix of feelings. Instead, I went home, where I was alone, disappointed, and facing a whole lot of free time. I have three main goals with…
