Randy Gaul

Craftmaker; Film/Video Artist; Mixed Media Artist; Visual Artist

Randy Gaul created Halocline Studio in September 2017. As a veteran artist and art director in the film industry, he has brought his 30 years of experience to this new venture. Using salvaged materials he has created a variety of artworks, furniture and lighting that demonstrate the value of what we so easily discard; in a radical re-appraisal of our attitude to consumption and waste the art itself becomes its own eloquent proponent. Randy has worked for high-profile directors such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis, M. Night Shyamalan and Martin Scorsese. His gallery of images includes not only his recent work, but that produced while working on film production for Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic. He continues providing visual development and concept work for television, games, theme parks and more recently virtual reality. In addition, Randy has been providing digital art for stories that have originated in the local community, and as these evolve he will not only share his personal works but will integrate the studio into being a vital part of this community where other artists can share their work from the visual and literary worlds. Fairfax, San Anselmo and San Rafael will provide the local creative base that will help Halocline grow. Together with this community spirit, Randy is a strong believer in conservation and global environmental awareness. Much of his recent work explores the tension between consumption, corporations and conservation. He believes that there are progressive solutions happening right here in our community that can utilize salvaged materials and creative thinking. Exploring these solutions he works with the Away Station and many other locations to acquire some of the raw materials that he upcycles into his art. His process uses only water based and recyclable materials and more recently epoxy in multiple layers to create rich and complex depth to landscapes and suggestive subject matter.

Lippy Lipman

Director; Film/Video Artist; Visual Artist; Animator

Lippy (Michael Lipman) is a classically trained 2D animation director who first found success as a feature film animator in Hollywood. With the introduction of interactive media he transitioned to producing major entertainment pieces for CD ROMs, console gaming, online advertising, and internet-based animation. All the while he was building a reputation as a solid animator and a director whose primary goal was to “protect the story” and keep clear communication at the forefront. Currently Lippy is enlisting new technologies like VR to further the immersive educational possibilities for his client, TED Ed. His success in creating educational shorts that are at once entertaining and memorable has made him one of the most requested directors in TED Ed’s stable of talent. He lives in Mill Valley.

I LOVE ART – I LOVE PEOPLE + I LOVE PEOPLE WHO LOVE ART Hello everyone, I am a RENAISSANCE ARTIST, and my favourite musician is the Italian Baroque Composer Claudio Monteverdi. Living here, in Marin County, with all the inspiration thru our absolutely breathtakingly beautiful environment and the interaction with the wonderful people. The sea and the light are very important to me and my work. Having studied Architecture and Design in Europe, nature, travelling and my love for music influences my entire work, from Photography to Interactive Jewelry Design. The interaction with different mediums, space, light, form, and color comes out in each new piece. I started to teach myself the art of ENCAUSTIC, 2014. ENCAUSTIC SCULPTURES + PAINTINGS. Personally as well as when it comes to my art- and design work, I am a big fan of thinking and living “out of the box”. I like to swim against the stream, and find my own techniques. My art is sometimes very elaborate, other pieces are totally reduced and calm, but most of them are very colorful … although sometimes I also reduce the Colors now as well. My work is created in “THE DOING” … my work is the result of what I see, smell, hear and experience in my life. My work is a translation onto canvas, wood or even into metal, fur and rubber. The later is about my jewelry. Doing a paintings or drawing often inspires me to a 3-dimensional sculpture as a a piece of jewelry or an encaustic sculpture, or vice versa. To me, Art, Design, Interior Design, and Architecture, Photography, etc. are all one; 2- or 3-dimensional creations which are creations on their own – reflecting +connecting. Space, light, shape, color and texture – they all communicate with each other differently, and still, they are all connected within each other.
