John was raised in San Francisco and has resided in Marin County for the last 20 years. As owner of PhotosMarin (http://www.photosmarin.com), John is intimately involved with Marin County artists and lovers of art. As a photographer, John brings his critical eye and artistic sensibilities when capturing and printing family memories, leading professional portrait and headshot sessions, scanning and enhancing family photos, old and new, and helping clients with their own photographic visions and workflows. In his own work, John leans towards beautiful landscapes, abstract scenes and the textures of everyday life (always with a twist).

Cindy Pavlinac

On exhibit in the deYoung Open 2023, Fine Art Museums of San Francisco through Jan 7, 2024. As an artist photographer, I lure images out of wisps of time. I seek vibrant alignments which reveal the resonant convergence of inner and outer landscapes. I tell tales of pilgrimage, ancient and modern, imaginative and real, questing towards expressions of the extraordinary. Fine art photographer Cindy Pavlinac focuses on the power of place, exploring ancient sanctuaries and modern expressions of the sacred. Archeoastronomy and labyrinths feature prominently in her work and travel. She creates contemplative images of beauty, mystery, power, and extraordinary presence. We are called to the journey and by wandering, we find our way home. An exhibiting artist with hundreds of shows and awards, I have presented at events from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco to Oxford University in England. Images from my Labyrinths of Spirit and Grace photo library have been widely published in dozens of magazines, music CDs, books, and book covers, including in Time Magazine and as Principal Photographer for the books, Labyrinths and Sanctuaries of the Goddess. Joy Phoenix

I received my first camera in 1953 when I was in second grade. Like many kids in those days the camera I got was a Kodak Brownie. The first time I remember using my camera was on a day away from school; we went on a Circle Tour around Manhattan. Perhaps that’s why I associate photography with “travel”. Journeys around the world, and at home, provide me the opportunity to capture images and memories for posterity. I’m drawn to details: natural, architectural, abstract & human. Fragments of everyday life, and moments in time captured in a “memory box". French photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue referred to his camera as an “image trap” and all things captured add up to a documentation of observations.

Susan Searway-Fertig

Since graduating from Dominican University of California with a Bachelor of Fine Arts emphasis in Digital Art and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History in 2004, I started up my own company Susan Searway Art & Design in 2006. My design side of my company provides Marketing Materials as Fine Art through graphic design, website design, and social media strategy. Whether you need marketing materials for print, email campaign, social media posts, or a website, I do it all. I find the field very gratifying and challenging to create new compositions every day for my clients. The art side of my business is my passion—producing, selling, and exhibiting my artwork. I am what you call a true Fine Artist, which means I work in a variety of media. Currently I work in digital art, watercolor, photography, drawing, and painting but I am always open to new techniques to convey my thoughts and feelings. I look for stability in an unstable society. Based on this concept I have created my figurative series: Persona. Persona is a personal reflection that focuses on the harmony of the body and the soul: the physical versus the spiritual, represented sometimes as one, sometimes as individuals. I try to blend the idealism of the human form in combination and contrast with the variety of people – people seen through the lens of reality varying in shape, size, and form. I like to use a lot of color, movement, and spontaneity in my compositions. As for photography I am a shutterbug. I will shoot anything and everything to find a composition. I mostly concentrate my work on nature. The most wonderful thing about working with nature as your subject matter is that it is ever changing. Artist Robert Bateman states it best, “Everything in nature has its own personality.” You can never capture or see the same composition twice. There are always little nuances of change. When you take photographs or observe wildlife they almost never stay in that “perfect” composition you envision. Therefore you have to do a lot of improvisation and creativity to get the composition you desire. Whether I am working in photography or on a two-dimensional plane I try to capture the essence of my subject by focusing on their lines, patterns, textures, forms, colors, and shapes. My hope is to find a unique perspective in all my work. As for exhibiting my art, I love to share it with the community and I am always looking for opportunities to sell and hang my work. Producing art is what makes me happy, so I try to focus as much time as I can on doing just that. I am excited and honored to have studio #32 at Art Works Downtown so please stop in whenever I am there. Photography has been in my life since my teens when I carefully saved up to buy my first 35mm camera. The field has come a long way since the days of developing black and white film in the dark room. Photography has been my form of creative expression for many years. I have since moved into the digital world- expanding my expertise in post processing. I love the ability to see my images in real time and the instant feedback that the digital experience allows. Photography is my tool to capture beauty, whether my subjects are landscapes, wildlife, or common household objects. Close and careful examination allows one to find that splendor. I am fortunate to live in Northern California where there are ample opportunities to search for those photos. I have also traveled the world and captured that experience on film (or pixels). My recent work is focused on abstract representations. I capture objects, flora, and fauna out and about and also photograph many objects in the studio. My goal is to capture the intrinsic qualities of light, texture, and geometry that makes these objects most interesting to me.

Tom Tabakin

I first got interested in photography when my neighbor took a picture in our backyard and then invited me to his house and walked me through the steps that lead to seeing a picture emerge on a sheet of paper in a tray of developer. I was hooked and fascinated. Photography lead to filmmaking, (interspersed with metal sculpture) and film school at the University of Southern California. My student film won the Cannes Film Festival Award for the Best Student Film in 1972. A ten year career in the film industry, as a filmmaker or cameraman in Israel, Kenya, South Africa, Ecuador, and finally back in Los Angeles. I also had the great fortune of working with a well-known commercial photographer in South Africa and other very talented people. Now, I am back to where I began. I will follow my need to dabble in shape and color and form, in various mediums. I love to experiment. I print on sheets of treated plastic and then transfer the images to sheets of watercolor paper. I imbed images in wax and work in encaustics. Recently, I am adding shape and texture to images that extend out from the flat surface with the use of acrylic mediums as well as wax. Also, I have been hand carving wooden art spoons and bowls.

Brian Tada is an award-winning fine art photographer specializing in nature and wildlife. Brian's photography journey began over 40 years ago working in the darkroom developing black and white photographs. Today Brian uses the latest digital art tools to bring his images to life. His artworks are in private collections in 27 U.S. states and four countries. Many have won contest awards and some have earned Editor’s Favorites on National Geographic Your Shot. Martha Ture

Mt. Tamalpais, its surrounding forests and streams, are my territory. It is part of the United Nations Golden Gate Biosphere, recognized for its abundance of species and habitats in the ever-growing and increasingly developed San Francisco Bay Area. In the years I've lived here, I've spent time with many individual animals and their family groups. I ramble the same trails and sit on the same hills every week. This regular practice makes me a familiar to the creatures here, and so, some of them let me take intimate portraits of their daily lives. The beautiful land and lakes, flowers and vistas, call me too. I have learned that the land and its plants and animals expect us to make and keep agreements - when we do, we are part of the place, and we can feel connected to the world.

I currently take three approaches to my work. I am a tree portraitist, a surrealist sculptor/photographer, and contemporary documentary photographer. These threads are tied through philosophies of surrealism, shamanism and animism. My objective within each of these categories is to show the the underlying themes that connect the transcendent and the mundane. This is the tradition of magical realism in which one strives to see beyond the periphery of cultural vision.
