Yuan Chen

Mixed Media Artist; Visual Artist

I’m a multidisciplinary artist born in Fuzhou, China. I migrated to the United States in 1999, settling in the Bay Area. I attended undergraduate school at UC Berkeley, graduating from UC Davis with an MFA degree. My work reflects what is accessible in the present moment, embracing a desire to realize the tangible beauty which lies beyond the momentary and impermanent. When immersed in the process, I merge with the piece, creating a fluid boundary between the artist and art. During the process, the unique character of the artwork reveals itself, allowing the piece to evolve and take on a momentum of its own.

Nancy Cicchetti

I have been an artist all my life. From life drawing, to oil painting and printmaking, I have explored many mediums to express myself. I am drawn to nature and the human form for inspiration. When something grabs my attention, I make a point of saving that image for a future painting, drawing or print. I love the layering of color and shape as well as the ability to capture a moment or a feeling. I have shown my work locally and nationally, with many pieces now owned in private and public collections. I try to keep a "beginner's mind" about my art, allowing the moment to dictate my next work. I hope that the wonder and excitement I feel when I'm creating comes across to the viewer.

Kathryn Cirincione

Visual Artist; Printmaker

As a printmaker, a photographer and a painter with Southern Italian ancestors, including artists who worked as painters, church muralists and stained glass window artists, in addition to having lived, travelled and worked extensively in Latin America, Europe and the United States, my art is influenced by the events, traditions and vibrant colors of these worlds, and reflects a heritage that includes ancient church art as well as involvement in contemporary social issues. I enjoy drawing on current macro events, culture and symbolism that I am told at once evoke familiarity, fun, remembrance and even wonder. Brooke Cook

My work comes from a place of storytelling, whimsy, experimentation and love of nature. My main materials are acrylics, watercolors, polymer clay and fabric. The items I create are both 2d and 3d, I make both useful and purely decorative items. They range from paintings of nature, animals and landscapes to more recent works using block printing to make banners, cards and soft sculpture. My sculpted pens, trees and jewelry are made with polymer clay and semi precious stone. In the past I created a line of fantasy sea pincushions that were made from felted felt, polymer clay, Emory powder and fine aquarium sand. My name C.WoozySundries comes from my finger puppet mascot Countess Woozy. Her fictional, fantastical world is the inspiration for much of my work under this small business name. If I had to sum this work up, it would be: “Useful Whimsies and Intriguing Thingamajigs”.

Christin Coy

For the past thirty years Christin Coy’s art work has reflected her appreciation for nature through her landscape and animal paintings in the style of classical realism, both in plein air and in her larger studio works. Christin’s oil paintings of Marin’s oak covered golden hills, coastal regions, and West Marin farm animals reflect her strong connection with the land, and bring to life the unique mood and beauty of each setting. She is especially attracted to the warm colors and light that appear in the late afternoon. An avid hiker, she always finds new subject matter for her paintings while exploring the muriad of local trails.“I love my profession and couldn’t ask for a more inspirational place to live and paint than here in Marin County.” Christin paints daily in her San Anselmo studio where she also welcomes visitors by appointment. She has participated in “Ranches and Rolling Hills” for the past 17 years, raising funds for the protection of farmland for Marin Agricultural Land Trust. Christin is a founding member of BayWood Artists who for the past 25 years have helped raise funds for the protection and conservation of Bay Area land and water. She is represented by Holton Studio Gallery in Berkeley. Her paintings are in collections throughout the United States. Christin has a degree in Fine Art from U.C. Berkeley and she is an artist member of the California Art Club.

Originally intended as a functional form of needlework, this medium has been elevated to new heights of embellishment. Laura Culver

Laura Culver was raised in Orinda, CA and earned a B.S. in Graphic Design from UC Davis. After a career in stock photography and advertising, she settled in San Rafael CA, and for several years was an artist specializing in Hand-Colored Photography. However, her life changed in 2006, when she chanced upon a local oil painting class. A little fun quickly became a driving passion, and she left the photography behind, to pursue the creativity and challenge of plein air (outdoor, on location) oil painting. Focusing on the “Colorist” approach, she gradually developed a distinctive style and palette of intense warm and cool colors. She has studied with Camille Przewodek, the Marin Art School and many others. Her oils have earned invitations to annual art shows including the Bolinas Museum and MarinScapes. She is an Artist member of the California Art Club and a member of the BayWood Artists, a small group of plein air painters dedicated to the preservation of local open spaces.

Anne-Marie De Rivera

My representational and figurative paintings grew out of the European influence of my early childhood, with the colors, passion, and folklore of Latin America where I resided many years. My art Education at L’Ecole de Beaux Arts de Geneve in Switzerland was largely focused on the Fauves artists such as Matisse, Gaughin and Rouault. Fascinated by nature, I perceive trees living as families with vital personalities. I am attracted to their relationship to water, depicting their reflections and their interaction. With the human figure and the animal form, either in portraits of people or their pets, my work focuses on revealing the moods and feelings of my subjects through their attitude and posture often surrounded by imaginary backgrounds. I am an abstract painter and have been working at it for most of my life. I am fascinated with the never-ending discovery. Each brush stroke is distinctive and has its own message. As the work evolves, thought, action, brush, become one. Surprising relationships occur, working towards new complex levels and new possibilities. I am a member of Artists of Mount Tamalpais, a group of 20 artists who live and have studios in the Muir Woods Park neighborhood.

David Delany

Albert Flynn DeSilver

Albert Flynn DeSilver is an internationally published poet, writer, speaker, and workshop leader. His latest book is Writing as a Path to Awakening (based on his popular workshops by the same name) published by Sounds True in 2017. Albert served as Marin County, California’s very first Poet Laureate from 2008-2010. His work has appeared in more than 100 literary journals worldwide including ZYZZYVA, New American Writing, Hanging Loose, Jubilat, Exquisite Corpse, Jacket (Australia), Poetry Kanto (Japan), Van Gogh’s Ear (France), and many others. He is also the author of the memoir Beamish Boy, which Kirkus reviews called “a beautifully written memoir poignant and inspirational. . ..” Albert received a BFA from the University of Colorado and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Albert is also a speaker and trainer who has taught writing workshops at the Esalen Institute, the Omega Institute, Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and literary conferences nationally. My work takes food as the subject matter for contemporary paintings. I am drawn to simple objects, most notably desserts, and likes to establish good color relationships between light and shadow. My focus is on color, texture, and graphic compositions that are pleasing to the eye. People say my paintings make them smile, and I'm delighted they have that effect.

Marguerite Elliot

Growing up on a small farm in rural Virginia, I spent many hours walking through fields and along stream banks. This was my first experience of deeply connecting to the earth. I feel a deep affinity with nature and the natural cycle of life. My art today has a direct connection to my years growing up in the country. As an artist, I work with steel and natural objects such as seedpods, leaves, and small stones. Although the intense heat of my welding torch transforms the steel, melting and bending it, even steel is transitory, eventually rusting away to nothing. Concerned with the current environmental destruction, loss of species, and irrevocable environmental changes taking place all over the world, my work functions as both a reliquary and a shrine, to what is lost or soon may be lost. SENTINELS: PROTECTORS OF WILD AND BEAUTIFUL PLACES My new series of large outdoor public sculptures is titled Sentinels. My sentinels keep watch or stand guard over our sacred lands but also symbolize the interface between technology and the environment. Inspired by the ubiquitous cell phones towers in our lives today, they also incorporate iconic images from ancient civilizations. Drawing energy from the earth, these Sentinels simultaneously broadcast warnings about the climate destruction we now face, while sending out waves of healing energy

Steve Emery

Grew up in Fairfax. Graduate from Drake in 1972. Graduated from UCSC in ART in 1977. Printed Kathleen Lipinski's serigraphs, 1979-2000. Participated in local art events since 1980: Sausalito Art Festival, Marin Art Festival at the Lagoon, Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival, Marin County Fair, MarinScapes and more. Have been on the Board of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival, the jury for the Sausalito & Marin Art Festivals, participate in Yosemite Renaissance and coached cross country & track at Drake for 10 seasons.Was awarded the Marin County Cultural Treasure Award in 2015 with wife, Kathleen Lipinski. Works primarily in acrylic with Marin landscape, Sierra landscape & lyrical abstraction.

Licita Fernandez

BIO I have always considered myself an artist. I remember standing at an easel in kindergarten, painting wagon train scenes (I grew up in an era of cowboys and Indians, as politically incorrect as that is) and wedding cake boats: these are ocean liners that in my kindergarten mind looked like tiers of wedding cakes floating in the sea. (Sixty plus years later, these wedding cake boats reappeared in my imagery!) For years I painted in watercolors, mostly botanical subject matter, mostly representational. More enjoyable for me to paint and for the viewer to view are my more whimsical, imaginative paintings. I created some of these in watercolor, but have moved to acrylic on canvas, digital painting, and oil on canvas almost exclusively. All my work shows my love of color. My work now: abstract, colorful, whimsical, joyful and imbued with humor and mystery. I’ve also spent many years teaching art to people of all ages, from preschool children to seniors. I have exhibited my artwork in California; Portland, Oregon; New Mexico; Tijuana, Guadalajara and Mexico City in Mexico. My work is in collections throughout the United States, in Mexico and in Colombia, South America.

Lynne Finlay

Lynne is a bi-coastal artist that resides near the inner coastal waterway in Wilmington, North Carolina and the San Francisco Bay in the redwoods of Mill Valley, CA. Graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in Graphic Design, Lynne has spent most of her career creating artwork for others and teaching. Just recently retired from teaching she has changed paths and has begun to explore painting full time. On location or later in the studio Lynne’s inspiration comes from travel, summer memories and coastal waters. She captures the light, color and mood of her surroundings in her paintings using a thoroughly modern colorist palette in both oils and acrylics. Her work is in many private residences throughout the US and is in several public collections. Tracy Flanagan

I ecoprint and stitch new life into upcycled discarded cloths using plants and natural dye products extracted from the earth. By reconfiguring these well worn cloths I tell a new story of connection between place, fiber, and family. Hand marked fabric- touched, worn, and loved- is art that celebrates and heals the body and spirit. After years as a doctor helping women stay healthy and birth babies, I am now a doula of cloth. Process-Botanical dyes and Ecoprinting I use cellulose (cotton, linen, hemp, and bamboo) and protein (wool, silk) fabrics, each prepared differently to accept dye and plant colors. The hand process of dipping the fabric, placing leaves on the cloth, and tight bundling for the heated pot create imprints in variations of form and color. With heat, these plants and flowers of Northern California discharge their color and image to the fabric, often with thrilling and unexpected results. With changing seasons, time of day, and individually unique trees, these botanical print designs constantly surprise.

Kim Ford Kitz

There are so many wonderful facets of art. After experimenting with many different mediums my creative soul chose oil paint as it's favorite tool to express with. I use my experience, memory and perception separately or sometimes tangled together to discover new ways of shaping compositions and painting techniques. My goal is to contrast and reveal the abstract beauty in many places such as; metropolitan skylines, coastal ridges, towering forests, aerial farmland, powerful ocean waves and bucolic rustic roads. Soaking in these surroundings colors appear more vibrant and form arises from the elements of light like fleeting magic. While working in the studio brushes are getting larger and sometimes give way to pallet knives and detail has been moved aside for a more direct response. The manipulation of the paint and some discovery by listening to what the image before me wants to become, landscapes are ever changing. It is my way of telling the story of what I saw and would like to make real. I earned by BFA from the Academy of Art University in 2005. I have recently moved my studio to a new location in Inverness, CA. It is located behind Artiquity Gallery which I am also the co-owner of. The gallery hosts art events and also offers vintage items and antiques for sale. The gallery is open Sat., Sun., and Mondays from 12:00 to 5:00pm. My studio hours are the same and visits by appointment are available as well. Come check it out!

Michael Friedland

I studied painting and design at Paier School of Art, Coronado School of Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of Art. I’m retired now from a forty year career as a designer. I have been teaching painting (with watercolor) for the past six years in Mill Valley. In Oakland, I help with CWA’s Community Outreach program teaching Vietnam veterans. I taught design at a university in Montréal and at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. And I teach for several weeks each year at Yosemite in their artists in residency program through the Yosemite Conservancy. I’m on the board of directors of the California Watercolor Association and am Director of their National Exhibition. I organized their Members Shows in recent years. I’ve just started teaching classes in August (2020) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael and will start another class for the Town of Corte Madera in October.
