Timothy Horn

Visual Artist

Timothy Horn was born and raised in the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City in 1984, with a focus in graphic design. After finishing school, he worked at several design firms in New York before moving to San Francisco in 1992, where he continued to work as a designer. Horn took his first painting class in 1998, followed by another in the fall of 1999, and within a year he knew he had found his calling. He began painting more and more, and doing less and less graphic design until the fall of 2006 when he closed his design business entirely. He now paints full-time and lives in the the small town of Fairfax where he is drawn to the everyday scenes of the rural areas in Marin and Sonoma Counties — the old buildings that have evaded development, the workings of ranch life, the old cars and trucks that continue on, or sometimes simply the play of light and shadow across planes of weathered color. Horn wants to create paintings that tell his story, that express his observations, “paintings that feel 100% Me”. His work has won numerous awards, has been featured in several magazines, and was on the cover of Southwest Art in 2012. He participates in several annual group shows, and is currently represented by four galleries. Every year, Horn teaches 4 – 6 painting workshops around the country and abroad. He is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America.

Peter Keresztury

I am a painter, sculptor and photographer who seeks beauty, harmony, balance and proportions in all my endeavors. I have always been involved in the creative arts and my latest works are abstract expressionist paintings. I work with acrylic paint on canvas and my designs are influenced by my thoughts and fantasies, in addition to the works of famous expressionist painters. I like strong vibrant colors that bring joy and excitement. My paintings have been exhibited in various galleries and shows, along with my sculptures, kinetic wind sculptures and landscape and pin-up photographs. I have also curated several sculpture and art exhibitions. I recently added my painting designs to some art sites that print them on various products. I live outside of San Francisco in Marin County, California, surrounded by my paintings, photographs, sculptures and kinetic wind sculptures.

Tracey Kessler

Designer; Mixed Media Artist; Visual Artist

Tracey M. Kessler was born in Huntington, New York and attended FIT in New York City where she earned her BFA. She also studied painting conservation and restoration at the Instituto de Conservacion y Restauracion de Bienes Culturales in Madrid, Spain. She began her career in New York City in architecture and interior design and spent the last 25 years working on commercial, residential, and retail projects on both coasts. After launching her own firm in San Francisco, TKID Tracey decided to follow her passion as an artist and spent the last few years back in New York developing new bodies of work. In 2010, Tracey relocated back to the Bay Area. Her work reflects the calm she finds in the daily interactions and conversations with acquaintances, friends, and family. Though inspired throughout the turbulent times of our modern era, her work (influenced by such artists as Tapies, Frankenthaler, Mitchell, Polke and Burri ) possesses a soothing, calm and organic feel clearly paralleled by her California lifestyle. Using a wide variety of mediums including oils, acrylic, inks, charcoal, gesso and natural pigments, the works begin to have their own voice. Tom Killion

Mixed Media Artist; Visual Artist; Writer

Tom was born and raised in Mill Valley, California, on the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. The rugged scenery of Marin County and Northern California inspired him from an early age to create landscape prints using linoleum and wood, strongly influenced by the traditional Japanese Ukiyo-ë style of Hokusai and Hiroshige. He studied History at UC Santa Cruz, where he was introduced to fine book printing by William Everson and Jack Stauffacher. In 1975, he produced his first illustrated book on UCSC's Cowell Press. After traveling extensively in Europe and Africa, Killion returned to Santa Cruz in 1977 and founded his own Quail Press, where he published his second book, "Fortress Marin". In 1978, Killion began graduate studies in African History at Stanford University, completing a doctorate on Ethiopia in 1985. He also continued to make woodcut prints of the California landscape, producing his large-format "The Coast of California" in 1979. During the early 1980s, Tom divided his time between history research in Europe and Africa, and the development of his multi-color woodcut prints. During 1987-1988, Killion worked as administrator of a medical relief program in a camp for Ethiopian refugees in Sudan and traveled with nationalist rebels in war-torn Eritrea. In 1990, after many years of work, Tom produced "Walls: A Journey Across Three Continents" -- an extensively illustrated travel book combining his African experiences with woodcut printmaking. Killion then devoted four years to teaching African History at Bowdoin College, Maine, and in 1994 was a Fulbright scholar at Asmara University in Eritrea. In 1995, Tom returned to California and taught in the Humanities Department at San Francisco State University while he worked on a new hand-printed, large-format book, "The High Sierra of California" in collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning poet Gary Snyder. The new book was published in a trade edition in 2002 and received a number of awards. In 2008 Tom and Gary published a second collaboration, "Tamalpais Walking," and in 2015 his third collaboration with Snyder and Heyday Books, "California's Wild Edge: The Coast in Poetry, History and Prints." Killion is currently working on landscape prints including treescapes, coastal and mountain views. His studio is located on Inverness Ridge near Point Reyes, California.

Tom Kirk

I am a Marin County artist, grew up in Santa Venetia. I paint abstract landscapes with clouds. I am influenced by living in Marin my whole life. My home in San Anselmo backs up to open space, and I am inspired to paint from my walks in nature. My paintings celebrate the beauty of nature. My sculptures are my way of expressing the fragility of the natural world. Bronze and stoneware fired "Raku" pieces are in a state of leaving this world. I also have been working in digital forms, drawing works on my iPad in ProCreate.

Marty Knapp

Photographer; Visual Artist

Marty Knapp has been photographing the beauty of the natural world near his Point Reyes home for over thirty years. A master printer, his photographs feature both dramatic and sublime moments of light, presented exclusively in classic black and white. His compositions express the beauty of light and design he's discovered in the natural world during the last thirty years. His most recent works express the mystery and wonderment he’s felt while photographing the starry heavens above. Numbered prints are in private and corporate collections, world-wide. They have been published in Lenswork, Black & White, and The World's Top Photographers. His book, Point Reyes 20 Years, was awarded the bronze medal in design for photography books in the 2007 International Independent Publisher competition. Marty and his wife Jean live in Point Reyes Station, California. There, in his studio, he makes his fine prints. These photographs are displayed in his gallery on Highway One and cataloged on his website, MartyKnapp.com. From Analog to Digital: In 2010, after 25 years of developing film and making silver gelatin prints in a traditional, wet darkroom, I started making my first digital prints both from scanned negatives and my first digitally-captured images. In February of 2011, I made my last silver gelatin prints. Today, I make archival pigment prints, using Ultrachrome K-3 inks on the industry’s finest 100% cotton smooth fine art papers. These prints are available for purchase online here and at the Marty Knapp Photo Gallery in Point Reyes Station. My current workflow includes the use of Adobe Lightroom for image processing and Epson large format printers to make my archival black and white prints. My current go-to cameras are mirrorless Sonys: an A7r and a Nex-7 which I use with current Leitz and legacy Canon FD lenses. One of my cameras has been converted to record infrared light which enables me to create dream-like images from light just beyond the range of our human eyes. Marie Krajan

I got my first taste of the creative thrill at the age of 7, when I covered my mother’s bathroom by ink scribbles. From there I went on to the School of Art and Design in Uherske Hradiste, Czechoslovakia, where I studied painting. After graduating, I continued my studies at the University of F. Palacky in Olomouc, where I studied Art and Czech literature. All this was happening under the watchful eyes of the Czech communistic regime. After graduation I headed West. I spent my professional life as an art director at various New York City ad agencies, both consumer and pharmaceutical. A few years ago I started to paint again–on Sunday mornings. When I need more freedom of expression, I rely on the inspiration of nature. I subscribe to Henri Matisse’s belief that art should be like an easy chair–feast for the eyes and rest for the soul.

Dan Krimm

Composer; Musician/Band; Visual Artist

I am a fretless electric bass guitarist, focusing mostly on modern jazz for my own compositions and band-leading (a lot of "ECM" type music, but with some degree of funk/rock-jazz fusion added). I have a wider range as a sideman, from avant garde free improv to singer-songwriters working in folk/pop/rock veins. I mostly focus on original music of one kind or another, not much into cover band work, though I'll do occasional covers that are in accord with my personal muse. I had classical violin training, but gave up that instrument decades ago. Also play a bit of finger-style nylon-string (6-string) guitar, mostly for composing and for my own private enjoyment, but I hardly ever perform in public on it. I cut my jazz teeth in college and in NYC for about 15 years thereafter. I received an NEA Jazz Fellowship grant in the mid-80s and have recorded three studio albums and a live concert recording from which several tunes were taken for a live album. Added to that are a few sideman recordings along the way. As a sideline I dabble a bit in abstract photography, re-contextualization of surface artifacts on objects as elements for composition in its own right. I've also experimented with digital processing to create enhanced works from photographic sources. On occasion I may participate in group exhibits in the area (see image gallery).

Earth first, green artist Bebe wants to bring awareness to the earth’s fragile ecosystem. My work tells a story about the human impact on plants, animals, air, water and life. Highly skilled in a diverse range of mixed media, Bebe’s most recent creations have employed fiber arts. Drawing inspiration from natural elements and various found objects, she often go on walks and finds something new that can incorporate into a piece. Her sculptural work includes intricate weavings that are created by using tension thus eliminating any need for adhesive materials. My art is elementary in the sense that I use common objects such as rocks and botanicals. I hope that my art envelopes the thought to lesson one’s ecological footprint.

Linda Larsen

Visual Artist

Influenced by years trekking the hills of Northern California in order to paint its eye-dazzling beauty, my studio abstracts still reflect my fascination with color. I often approach an abstract painting by first laying out a spacious expanse of one color, then adding or subtracting further colors intuitively, composing with relationships between color and shape. Experimenting with poured paint to differentiate areas, I allow the paint to define outcomes, accessing hidden levels of consciousness to hopefully sidestep my habitual preferences and intentions. These poured shapes have enlarged my vocabulary of expressive forms and have freed me from my tendency to judge my results too harshly. I may add lines to emphasize the energetic direction or mood of the composition. These lines can become too aggressive, intruding upon the stillness of meditative spaces and require effort to keep them in check. Settling on a satisfying “construction” may take one or two sessions, or more frequently, one or two months visiting my studio. The physicality and constant challenge of abstract composition keep the work alive for me. The outcome is always a surprise. Linda Larsen

Liz Lauter has been an artist, designer and art educator for over 35 years. She studied drawing and painting with Wayne Thiebaud at UC Davis, ceramics with Ruby O’Burke in San Francisco, and managed her own textile products and design business. She taught Ceramics in Marin County at Redwood High School for the past 20 years and built an extensive program which included workshop classes for artists and art teachers. She lives and has her studio in West Marin in Forest Knolls, California and sells her work locally and nationally.

Barbara Lawrence

Barbara Lawrence studied at California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland and the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Deciding early on to make her living with art, Lawrence worked in design, production graphics and computer illustration. Twenty years ago she made the courageous decision to follow the momentum of what she sees as the most creative period of her life and start painting full time. Barbara teaches classes and workshops in the United States and Europe. Her work can be seen in numerous shows and galleries in and around California.

Jeanette Le Grue

Jeanette Le Grue was born and raised on Kodiak Island, Alaska. From a childhood of dramatic northern landscapes with midnight sun, long days of darkness, and the intensity of new life springing forth, comes a unique and powerful style all her own. Jeanette moved to California in 1980, and developed the F.I.S.H. School of Color, which is an acronym for those things that have most influenced her work: F is for Jeanette’s French Father and her earlier life of commercial Fishing off Kodiak Island. I is for Impressionism and its emphasis on color and light. S is for Sergei (Bongart), the great Russian master painter. H is for Hawthorn (Charles), who founded the Cape Code School of Art.. Jeanette shows her work in galleries and museums throughout the United States. She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and Plein Air Scene. She has received numerous awards, including First Place in the American Impressionist Society’s National Show, the Irvine Museum Award at the Hawaii Plein Air Event, the Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and the Helen De Cozen Award at the American Artists Grand National Exhibition in New York. Artist Statement: I paint in oil in bold fresh color. My subjects include still lifes, figures, interior scenes, garden settings, and landscapes. But my work is not really about the subject itself. I am more interested in trying to capture the essence of my subject through the lush, luminous, sensual medium of oil paint. I paint both in the studio and en plein air. I am inspired by moody days on the water, or patterns of light and dark in the landscape. I try to express the mood or feeling of what I see. I like to paint loose, with large brushes, and apply large spots of color. Although I paint loose, I work within a strong abstract design. I create unusual compositions, sometimes breaking up the frame so that objects are cut off at an odd angle. I see myself as a detective trying to capture the vitality or diversity of a scene. I love patterns of reflected light and subtle nuances of color. I am always experimenting, looking for new ways to express my perceptions and feelings. The painters who have inspired and influenced me include such masters as Sergei Bongart, Charles Hawthorne, Joaquin Sorolla, and Franz Bischoff. They have helped me develop my own approach to color and light.

I make large oil paintings. I make painting about the Earth, about why our planet is the way it is—paintings about physics and chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, meteorology, oceanography… I make paintings about what was here before humans and what will be here after. I try to create work that is thoughtful and provocative, paintings about things that exist but cannot be seen, what is here in this cosmos that we don’t know and cannot understand. I do not make pictures for decoration. I make experiments in paint.

Richard Lindenberg

STATEMENT Richard is an award winning Northern California landscape artist, painting with oils, primarily en Plein Air. The discovery and joy of painting came to him quite late in his life path, but not unexpectedly. Landscape photography was his chosen creative medium for thirty years. Large, medium and small format cameras... using primarily black and white images and the magic of polaroid transfers on watercolor paper. After taking a painting class in soft Pastels to enhance his Polaroid transfers… He dedicated himself to the possibilities that painting presented. Most of Richard’s career was spent as an entrepreneur, importer and graphic designer. He became more heavily involved in the art industry as the product manager for an exclusive importer of French fine art materials where his eyes were opened to the unique history of the impressionist era and to art materials in general. He is a committed plein air painter and has studied with many of California’s finest professionals. Richard is regularly invited to many plein-air events and participates in annual Northern California shows that raise funds for numerous causes. He is one of the MALT (Marin Agricultural Land Trust) painters and other shows include MarinScapes, Laguna Plein Air Invitational, Sonoma Plein Air, Zion National Park Plein Air Invitational, Napa Valley Art Festival, the San Luis Obispo Plein Air Festival and the Door County Plein Air Festival. Richard represents Plein Air Magazine, is an artist member of the California Art Club and previous Co-Chairman of the CAC Northern California Chapter. Kathleen Lipinski

Visual Artist

Kathleen Lipinski has worked with Marin landscape in painting and printmaking for 35 years. Her oil paintings range in size from postcard-sized to canvases as large as 14 feet wide. Her art combines a love of nature with her dedication to realism, attention to detail, and ability to capture the quality of light. Kathleen's shows include the Triton Museum, Morris Graves Museum and Jenkins-Johnson Gallery in San Francisco and New York. Her work has been featured at Marin/Scapes and at the Sausalito Art Festival annually for 30 years. Kathleen & her husband, artist Steve Emery, are the 2015 recipients of the Marin Cultural Treasure Award. Art viewings are available at her San Anselmo studio by appointment.

Lippy Lipman

Director; Film/Video Artist; Visual Artist; Animator

Lippy (Michael Lipman) is a classically trained 2D animation director who first found success as a feature film animator in Hollywood. With the introduction of interactive media he transitioned to producing major entertainment pieces for CD ROMs, console gaming, online advertising, and internet-based animation. All the while he was building a reputation as a solid animator and a director whose primary goal was to “protect the story” and keep clear communication at the forefront. Currently Lippy is enlisting new technologies like VR to further the immersive educational possibilities for his client, TED Ed. His success in creating educational shorts that are at once entertaining and memorable has made him one of the most requested directors in TED Ed’s stable of talent. He lives in Mill Valley.

Toni Littlejohn

Mixed Media Artist; Visual Artist; Painter

Toni Littlejohn is a mixed media artist living and working in Point Reyes Station. She has exhibited her work extensively in the Bay Area and is a founding member of Gallery Route One, as well as its board president. Recent solo exhibitions include “The Paint of Paint” at Toby’s Art Gallery in Point Reyes Station, “In Earthed” at Crome Architecture in San Rafael and “After Death Experiences” at Commonweal Gallery in Bolinas. In 2016, a flash drive with images of her paintings launched into space aboard NASA's OSIRIS-Rex, which will circle Asteroid Bennu before returning to Earth in 2023. For 26 years Littlejohn has been leading Wild Carrots, an arts workshop for artists and people new to making art.

Jacqueline Mallegni

The practice of merging art + life and the concept of art as a healing force has brought me closer to embodying a fuller sense of myself as maker. Engaging others in exploring their creative process has been a profound teacher relative to how creativity is limitless and unique. By allowing creativity to emerge I engage in its potency providing a path to healing on a deep level. I teach workshops in California and New Mexico . I'm a member of the New Mexico Fiber Artists and Artists Directory, the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists, and affiliated with InArt Gallery, Santa Fe and MADE Contemporary Craft, California. My work has been published in Still Point Arts Quarterly and West Marin Review. My collection of haiku, poetry and sculpture entitled Solitude was published in 2018 by Shanti Arts in 2018.

Patrick Maloney

Patrick Maloney paints and sculpts figures and patterns which emerge from inner experience, and has evolved a language related to art made by our early ancestors. His influences have been archaic art, tribal art, working with children, and early Christian art. Patrick has exhibited his drawings and paintings throughout the Bay Area, including solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art Rental Gallery, Allport Gallery in San Francisco, and The Marin Community Foundation. Patrick has taught art in many settings—including schools, Marin County Juvenile Hall and San Quentin Prison—for over 30 years. Stela Mandel

I am an artist and Medical Illustrator working at the Industrial Center Building in beautiful Sausalito, California. These 2 vocations are complementary in expected and unexpected ways. Whether it is my need to understand the workings of the subjects in my paintings or the way I repurpose medical imaging in my mixed media work my art reflects my background as a Medical Illustrator. Like the scientists I have worked with I begin with a thesis or goal and run with the surprises that come as I pursue that goal.
