Canal Arts Initiative welcomes artist proposals for a public art/mural in the Canal
Application Deadline:
* December 15, 2020
The Canal Arts Initiative (CAI) invites mural artists and artist teams to propose a creation of public art that reflects a positive spiritual message and ignites imagination in the immigrant-rich Canal community—art that reflects the aspirations of the largely underserved Latino cultures in the heart of San Rafael’s service business district, in the heart of Marin County.
The lead artist or artist team will collaborate with five contributing and/or youth artists from the Canal community, both to be selected by the CAI Guidance Group.
Specifications/Payments/Dates:
- Lead artist(s) will be paid a maximum of $8,000 for a work of approximately 400 sq.ft. on a prominent gateway to the Canal, suitable for a visual Welcome to the Canal (4’x40′ panel)*.
- Contributing and/or youth artists will be paid a total of $1,000.
- Permits, scaffold, lift or building prep costs will be paid by project sponsors.
- Application deadline: December 15, 2020
- Project to be completed by July 1, 2021. A professional video team will be documenting the process**.
- Artist selection will be made by January 1, 2021. All applicants will be notified of results.
The project is being managed by Storek Studio/Architecture.
This project is the inaugural of a larger campaign to create public art, small and large, to bring more color and visual interest to a part of San Rafael and to a population that has gone without, and is now suffering from this pandemic.
*Our selected site, 3301 Kerner Street, a Canal gateway location, awaiting County approval. It is temporarily an emergency shelter, to be converted to permanent affordable housing.
