Diane Epstein’s Fresco Photography is in good company. Marc Chagall. Henri Matisse. Joan Miro. All are artists whose work is hanging on the walls of Room Art Gallery in Mill Valley beginning February 1st. Timed for Valentines Day.
Epstein’s focus is on three images of books. Two are ancient, from the Bibliotecha Angelica in Rome, the Library of Angels. The third book, whose blank pages flutter, is about writing the new story.
Epstein lived two decades in Italy before returning to the San Francisco Bay Area. While in Italy, Epstein created a technique she calls Fresco Photography. She had been asked to do a celebrated show for the Belgium Ambassador whose residence revealed a full view of the Forum.
Struck by the sense that photographers for decades had documented the Forum, Epstein was compelled to create images like no others, that revealed the patina of time. “Because I was so enthralled with Fresco paintings, with the crumbling walls of Rome, and the colors and the elements, and the shapes, and the architectural details, I started to experiment with a lot of my images, as if they were like layers and layers of paint.” Fresco Photography was born, a result of using multiple exposures.
Epstein shoots architectural details, textural remnants and natural elements that evoke ancient times, paying reverence to nature, culture and imagination. This use of biophilic design breathes life back into interior spaces, encouraging serenity and aliveness. Along with galleries, Epstein’s photography graces homes, workplaces, and environments like hospitals and hotels.
