Gypsy Jazz with Tim Kliphuis & Jimmy Grant

Drawing inspiration from 1930s in Paris to current-day classical & folk music

* Thursday, March 16, 8:00 pm

Award-winning violin legend Tim Kliphuis (Holland) teams up with America’s fast rising star on gypsy jazz guitar Jimmy Grant (LA) to celebrate the music of famed musical duo, Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Re-creating the 1930s in Paris, and drawing inspiration from current-day classical and folk music as well, they alternate moments of dazzling interplay with melancholy and sheer exhilaration, in an inspired journey!

Award-winning Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis has created a brand-new style that embraces classical, gypsy jazz, and folk. Hailed as a ‘current-day improvising Paganini’, his inclusive and innovative approach to music has united audiences and is influencing a new generation of string players.

As a composer, Kliphuis has dedicated his art to the challenges on our planet. His climate change suite The Five Elements accompanied the Royal mission to Stockholm to much acclaim, and Triple Concerto Phoenix Rising (commissioned by NTR ZaterdagMatinee) considers our past, present, and future.

An in-demand educator and author of the best-selling book Gypsy Jazz Violin, Tim is Professor of String Improvisation at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam and Director of the gypsy jazz summer school Grappelli-Django Camp.

In 2022, he started the world’s first comprehensive online course for jazz violin, Tim Kliphuis Studio. As a Sony Classical artist, Kliphuis recorded Vivaldi- inspired ‘Reflecting the Seasons’ in 2016, followed by ‘Brandenburg’, based on Bach’s Concertos, and his own ‘Ulysses’ Violin Concerto in 2018.

He was awarded the Scottish Jazz Award, the South African Woordfees Award, and the Polish ‘Swing Raven’ Prize. After his master’s degree in classical violin at the Amsterdam Conservatoire, Kliphuis studied with the European Sinti gypsies. He recorded and toured with gypsy guitar legends Fapy Lafertin, The Rosenberg Trio and, Angelo Debarre.

Native to Northern California, Jimmy Grant grew up in a household full of rich musical influences. While his early influences also included Russian Folk, Balkan, traditional Hungarian, Bluegrass, Celtic and Classical, from a young age he gravitated towards the music of Django Reinhardt.

He plays a blend of musics from all over the world and his own compositions. He has studied with acclaimed guitarists Jim Nichols and Howard Alden, and in addition to Django Reinhardt, his other major musical influences are Sandu Ciorba, Bach, Kovacs Andor, Roby Lakatos and Angelo Debarre.

He has performed with artists such as David Grisman, Paulus Schaefer ,Tim Kliphuis, Gonzalo Bergara, Ludovic Beier, Velvet Caravan, Rhythm Future Quartet, Hot Club of San Francisco and more, and has played at the Savannah Musci Festival, Los Angeles Django Reinhardt Festival, Nor-Cal Jazz Fest, Djangofest Northwest and The New York Hot Jazz Festival.

He has recorded two albums under his own name, and performed on several other albums. Jimmy’s original song Insomnia was a finalist in the John Lennon songwriting competition(in the jazz category).

As Jimmy puts it, “We believe that Jazz, and the music of Django, is a piece of history worth preserving.”
