Curated by Louisa Gloger

In this multifaceted exhibition, Helina Metaferia draws from her interdisciplinary practice to emphasize narratives centered on social engagement.

Her process, rooted in the archives and history of activism in the United States, is simultaneously focused on contemporary BIPOC women, all of whom are directly involved with the artist through performance-as-protest workshops.

Her work brings to the forefront untold, or unheralded, stories. Featuring a diverse range of media, including collage, tapestry, and video, All Put Together reminds us that progress, or the labor in pushing for progress, is never linear. It is power, and it is vulnerability. It is failure, and it is success.

Where we are today is the culmination of this work, and through Metaferia’s meticulously rendered collage portraits and video, we are made aware of the presence of the bodies who have spoken out, marched, and held signs in protest.

Helina Metaferia received her MFA from Tufts University’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Recent solo exhibitions include Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Praise Shadows Gallery, Boston, MA; Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA; and New York University’s The Gallatin Galleries, New York, NY. Group exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Detroit, MI; CF Hill, Stockholm, Sweden; and Modern Art Museum, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She currently serves as Assistant Professor at Brown University in the Visual Art department and lives and works in New York City.
