Juneteenth in West Marin: A Celebration of Freedom

An entertaining, educational, and informative event honoring history and heritage

Dr. Mwanza’s Cabaret Underground in collaboration with the San Geronimo Valley Community Center is proud to present, Juneteenth in West Marin: A Celebration of Freedom, Sunday, September 12th, 3:00-5:00 pm in the courtyard of the San Geronimo Valley Community Center in San Geronimo, California.

For the very first time in history ‘Juneteenth’ will be commemorated in San Geronimo Valley in Marin County. This historical event will be educational, informative and entertaining. Juneteenth, traditionally celebrated on June 19th, was rescheduled from a virtual event on 6/27/21 to a live event when the state restrictions lifted.

Through music, storytelling, and incredible performance, our community will celebrate Juneteenth and honor the history and heritage of this important holiday!

Participants in the historic event, listed in order of appearance:

  • Black National Anthem ‘Lift Every Voice & Sing’Janice Maxie Reed
  • Ancestral Ceremony – United Sun Drums of Urban African Ensemble
  • History of Juneteenth – June Farmer
  • ‘We Shall Over Come & Rise’, an original Rap – Osiezhe GJ Bramah & Sharika Gregory
  • History of Marin City, CA – Florence Williams
  • ‘The Mo’, an original poetic writing that shares the historical story of the San Francisco Fillmore District urban renewal, during the 1950s. – Franklin Hall
  • ‘Change Gonna Come’Art is Health Soul & Jazz Band, featuring Janice Maxie Reid
  • ‘Tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou, Excerpts’Dr. Mwanza Furaha, Gail Muldrow, Carlton Carey and special guest Richard Howell
  • Dr. Mwanza Furaha will pay tribute to Dr. Angelou by performing excerpts from her writings including Phenomenal Woman, Song of Quotes, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and many others with Gail Muldrow on guitar, Carlton Carey on drums and Richard Howell on sax.

Tickets are $10 for Adults, Children 12 & under are free. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to ‘Just Armour “Just Give Love Skate”’ in Marin City, California.

All attendees must show proof of vaccination and face coverings must be worn.

Proof of vaccination required from all in person attendees.  Face masks requested and required in all indoor spaces per Marin County Public Health Guidelines.
