Congratulations to the 8th grade graduating class of West Marin School

The eighth grade students of West Marin School made portraits of themselves in the style of Frida Kahlo, working in Gallery Route One’s AIS (Artists in the Schools) program.
A continuing tradition, these portraits have always been displayed at their graduation celebration.
This year the portraits are displayed behind the divided windows of GRO, and on the gallery website.
Viewing the artwork of Frida Kahlo and writing a poem about themselves with the assistance of West Marin schoolteacher Julie Cassel, the students literally examine themselves using a mirror.
After several lessons with AIS art teacher Vickisa, the students created a self-reflective portrait framed in a Mexican style: a folk-art tin frame that each student makes and decorates.
The students emerge with a sense of empowerment and achievement before progressing to high school, and their family has a portrait to keep forever. We hope that the families and friends of all of the students will enjoy the creativity of these innovative works.
