Discussion of a young-adult novel about an Indigenous girl’s escape from indentured servitude
Come join Lea Aschkenas for a discussion of The Queen of Water, by Laura Resau.
Living in a village in Ecuador, a Quechua Indian girl is sent to work as an indentured servant for an upper class “mestizo” family.
Based on a true story, this novel begins in an impoverished Andean village where seven-year-old Virginia is taken from her Indigenous family to be an unpaid servant in a mestizo household.
For the next eight years, she struggles to hold on to her spirit. After escaping as a teenager, she must build a life for herself and reclaim her identity.
