Live music accompanies a recently available silent version of Britain’s first “talkie”
Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (1929) stars Anny Ondra, John Longden and Cyril Ritchard in a tempestuous tale of crime, intrigue, and, indeed, blackmail, rife with Hitchcock’s burgeoning stylistic trademarks (blonde in peril, climactic use of historic landmarks, winking personal cameos).
Originally released as the first British “talkie” in the early days of motion pictures, Hitchcock always intended this “romance of Scotland Yard” to be a silent film – and audiences and critics alike have preferred this version ever since.
The Rafael is proud to present this program in concert with the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, just as Hitch would have wanted it.
Following our screening, MAMPO director Rodney Sauer will answer questions about his work.
