Lobby Exhibit:  Muriel Schmalberg Ullman – Paintings Over The Years (Watercolor & Acrylic)

Sausalito painter, Muriel Schmalberg Ullman, paints on location. Favorite subjects are farmers markets, beaches, gardens, village and cafe views, flowers and bicycles. She finds her views and plants her easel at farmers markets in California and France, quiet places in the countryside, and in the small villages near her summer house in southwest France where her garden and woods is a favorite subject. The watercolor and acrylic paintings are full of the gorgeous light and moments of every day life.

Ms. Ullman has a B.A. & M.A. in Art Education from Hunter College in NYC. In 1980 she decided to just paint and has been doing so ever since. Ms. Ullman shows her paintings in the Bay Area, Carmel, the Hamptons.  She has had many solo shows including Mondavi Winery, Scharffenberger Cellars, a small venue in southwest France, and in 1992 a solo show at Alliance Francaise de San Francisco.  Her work is in many collections including Kaiser Permanente and has been used on book covers and as illustration.

Crescendo Exhibit:  Sarah HaBa – Unabridged (works on paper)

Artist statement:

My Books series explores the archives of memory — painted blank for memories lost, painted full of desire for what must be chronicled but is out of reach. The blank books are accounts of my memory loss. Book covers are thrown open, pages stilled to reveal nothing. They represent the emotions hovering between the lines of my thoughts.

I paint in watercolor to represent fragility of thought and emotion. Through careful painting, the white of the paper is activated to become light. The light destroys the form of the still life.

It is in this visible space of destruction that emotion is conveyed. The form hovers between materiality and immateriality. The shadow provides visual and emotional weight, darker and heavier than the form suggests.

Through paint, water, and patience, the still-lifes become an external product of an internal process, shoved out into the world, my explanation of life.
