Two Roads Trio presents To Keep the Dark Away: Songs of Hope

Pianist, soprano & cellist preform new song settings of poetry by Emily Dickinson; Schumann & more

Noon Concerts Series to the Throckmorton stage, filling our theatre with the warmth and beauty of classical music!

* Wednesday, April 19, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

This program will feature soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine. Guarrine and her husband, cellist Karl Knapp, will collaborate with Pianist, Ian Scarfe on a program that includes new song settings of poetry by Emily Dickinson.

They will perform classical works of art song and opera alongside a new song cycle by composer Scott Gendel, To Keep the Dark Away. This work, and others by Amy Beach and Gaetano Braga, demonstrate how successfully the cello can be brought into an ensemble with the voice, adding its rich sonority to the blend of soprano and piano.

Soprano Jamie-Rose Guarrine is acclaimed for her “utterly thrilling, agile voice” and praised for bringing “pathos, beauty, and heartbreaking skill” to her performances. She has performed on the stages of Los Angeles Opera, Minnesota Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, among many others. She is an alumna of the SF Opera’s Merola program, and currently Professor of Voice at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Cellist Karl Knapp is an active educator, with a cello studio of dozens of young future stars and a position at Amherst College in Massachusetts. He has performed extensively as a chamber musician and soloist, most recently during his time in Alaska, where he served as Principal Cellist with the Fairbanks Symphony, the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, and the Juneau Symphony.

Pianist Ian Scarfe is a fixture of the San Francisco Bay Area’s classical music scene, known as much for his engaging stage presence and charismatic speaking as he is for his piano performances. He is the founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, and tours regularly with the Zurich Beethoven Trio
