John Turner Artist Statement

My interest in photography and art ranges from 20th Century American Folk Art, to the emerging field of outsider photography. Over years of travel, I’ve taken thousands of photographs and collected hundreds of souvenir postcards.

One time, on a visit to Mexico, I came across a hand-tinted colored postcard, which was sentimental in message and visually, somewhat surreal. Using this as an inspiration and coupled with my interests, I began painting on some of my favorite images. 

What I enjoy about this process is that it gives me a second bite at the apple, rearranging and enhancing the reality captured by our cameras, often resulting in a new emotional tone.
