Saturday, May 20, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month with Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band on the lawn at the Novato Library. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy an outdoor concert that will expand your musical horizons, or at the very least, delight you. Dancing is encouraged! And, enjoy delicious rugelach donated by Wise Sons Jewish Deli.
Klezmer music originates from the Jews of Eastern Europe and was played at weddings and other joyful celebrations. The Yiddish term “klezmer” is derived from the Hebrew words “klei” for instrument or vessel and “zemer” which means song. One interpretation suggestion that “vessel of song” refers to the ancient Jewish belief that music flows through the musician as through a vessel.
You can hear the influence of many different musical traditions in the tunes, including music of the Roma peoples, European folk music, classical music, cantorial music, and American jazz. Traditionally, bands included the violin, cello, hammered dulcimer, flute and piccolo but over time other instruments have been added such as the accordion, clarinet, saxophone, tuba, bass drum and guitar.
This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Marin County Free Library.
Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band is a popular choice for weddings and other celebrations.
