The Legacy of Marin City – A Housing Story

Marin City 80 art exhibit: from Felecia Gaston and Daniel Ruark – housing and survival spirit

Exhibition Dates:
* August 20 – November 1

The Department of Cultural Services and the Marin Cultural Association proudly celebrate the 80th anniversary of Marin City with two unique art exhibits and a special theater performance that celebrates the Black narrative and experience of people who have endured through incredible odds.

The two exhibits are curated by Jahi of Microphone Mechanics in partnership with Performing Stars of Marin.

This multimedia presentation of newspaper articles and Marin City community artifacts tells a narrative of housing discrimination, land grab, outside developers, and the continual fight for housing rights and equality in Marin City.

The Legacy of Marin City, A Housing Story features work from the Felecia Gaston Collection and the Daniel Ruark Collection and explores how Marin City residents have endured housing inequities over the years, the history of plans to remove Black people from the area after World War II, and the survival spirit of the people who stayed and made Marin City home.

There will also be a special section on Marin’s Restrictive Covenant Project. The Restrictive Covenant Project produced by the County of Marin tells the history and impact of discriminatory practices and government policies that created segregated communities in Marin County, with a special focus on Marin City.
