Toni Littlejohn has created a body of work deeply influenced by her concern for the earth—its past, present and future—and the seismic undercurrents of her home landscape on Tomales Bay. Thinking of herself as a conduit rather than an author of her paintings, Toni Littlejohn doesn’t depict landscapes, but allows them to emerge.
Mixing acrylics and liquid latex, she creates a medium that resists control. While she props her canvases up on paint cans, sprays water and tilts the surface in an attempt to direct the flow, the paint ultimately finds its own course. The medium dries into formations that mimic the buildup of sediments and alluvial fans, cresting waves and the craggy mass of mountains, magma and ice flows and the shifting of glaciers. After the paint dries, Littlejohn returns to add additional layers, often compressing eons of geologic time onto one picture plane. This layered depth refuses stasis—this is a world in formation and flux, and the paintings feel beyond the binary of interior and exterior. On Littlejohn’s canvases, the two are interchangeable, one always in a state of becoming the other.
