Weaving with Charlie Kennard: Family Open House at the Giant Basket
Charlie will weave a “laundry basket” from a willow similar to that used to construct the Giant Basket, and will explain his technique as he goes along.
Just in time for Easter, you are invited to join weaver Charlie Kennard and learn more about the techniques he and a team of helpers used to construct the Giant Basket that is now in the Habitat Garden at the Marin Art & Garden Center. The Giant Basket was constructed using a Pomo Indian technique in the course of 4 days and measures 13 feet across and more than 6 feet high—as big as a mini-van! It sits in a shady part of the Habitat Garden near the entry.
On Saturday, April 15th from 10 am – 1 pm, Charlie will weave a “laundry basket” from a willow similar to that used to construct the Giant Basket, and will explain his technique as he goes along. Nearby, kids can try some of the same moves using willow to weave a wavy enclosure under the great English Oak.
You can drop in and watch or plan to participate and stay while the basket and fence take shape over the course of the morning. Light refreshments available.
Self-guided tours of the Basketry Garden at MAGC will also be offered, with a map showing the many different plants suitable for weaving that are grown on the hillside behind the Barn Theater. The Basketry Garden is also home to the MAGC beehives, kept in traditional woven “skeps” and tended by Charlie Kennard. The bees love the gardens at MAGC and produce a significant crop of honey each year.
This event is free and no registration is necessary.
