Where Have All the Birds Gone? – Community Event/Reception

An Activist Art Event and Reception in conjunction with ARTxMarin

Taking place at the Fairfax Parkade (Intersection of Bolinas and Broadway)

An award-winning sculptor’s “Where Have All the Birds Gone?”, now on display in the town’s main square, will be celebrated October 17 with a collaborative children’s art event and reception.

The Town of Fairfax and ARTxMarin are  proud to celebrate the work of one of their own – Marguerite Elliot, an internationally recognized Fairfax Environmental Artist – with an event that focuses on creative collaboration through art.

Tables will be set up with art supplies, where Marguerite will invite children to draw or make posters about their concerns, hopes and dreams for our environment, which will be displayed at the site.

As she puts it, “I want this to be a collaborative event, as I strongly feel that the health of our planet is in the hands of today’s youth.”

Marguerite’s sculpture brings attention to the 3 million birds we have lost in the past 50 years due to man-made causes. She often draws on a quote from author Rachel Carson in her book Silent Spring: “On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices, there was now no sound…”

The Fairfax October 17 community event invites all to express their thoughts about the environment and honor our beloved birds, in a fun, collaborative way.

Marguerite Elliot is an award-winning multi-media sculptor who works primarily in welded steel. Throughout her later career, she has used her artwork to address issues of environmental fragility, preservation, and interconnectedness in a continually industrializing world. Her work has been exhibited widely across the U.S. Her large-scale sculptures are installed in sculpture parks in Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Nevada, and New York. Her earlier work is archived at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
