Teen Workshop: Portrait, Self-Portrait, & Selfie

Teen Workshop: Portrait, Self-Portrait, & Selfie

Presented by The Image Flow at The Image Flow (Miller Ave, Mill Valley)

Throughout history, a self-portrait was reserved almost exclusively for artists. When technology added a camera to the cell phone suddenly everyone wanted to take a selfie and post it!

In this summer photography workshop designed for teens, we’ll examine how portraits and self-portraits have been used historically, and how the idea of “conveying an image” has changed over the years. We’ll discuss what the current trends are, and what’s next.

We’ll explore portraiture in social media, what makes one image get more “likes” than another, and whether it’s strictly a popularity contest or does a good photo really matter.

Explore the similarities and differences between traditional portraits, self-portraits, and selfies with instructor Gale Jesi. We will use a digital SLR in the studio to see how clothing, props, poses, gestures, camera angles and lighting have the power to convey who you are.

Gale Jesi has taught Photography to teens for over 20 years at San Francisco University High School and Marin Academy. She has given numerous workshops in photography and continues to help many private clients reach their photographic goals. She is a lifelong champion of visual literacy. Jesi received her BA in Fine Art from UC Berkeley, Phi Beta Kappa, and MFA from UC Davis. She has shown her work nationally and internationally and is the founder of seechr.com and missingmotherproject.com.
