Michael Henderson

Presented by Fenix at Fenix

Four-time GRAMMY® nominee and inventor of dropped D tuning, Michael Henderson is an all-around musician—singer, songwriter, bassist, producer, and arranger. Henderson takes his listeners to the brink and back, playing many memorable classics, including “You Are My Starship,” “Be My Girl,” “Valentine Love,” “Take Me (I’m Yours),” “At the Concert,” “In the Night Time,” “Wide Receiver,” and so many more.

He first gained worldwide recognition as a young bass player with groups like the Detroit Emeralds, the Fantastic Four, the Funk Brothers, and was the Funk anchor for Stevie Wonder when he was only 16! Musicians marvel at his prowess and knowledge of his instrument. After an extraordinary, truly inspiring Stevie Wonder concert, legendary trumpeter Miles Davis made his way backstage only to inform Stevie, “I’m takin’ yo’ f****** bass player!” While working with Miles, he developed a new style of playing. He incessantly traveled the world with Miles, until Henderson decided to write, sing, and record his first hit, “Valentine Love”—a classic lovers’ anthem that features the sassy, jazzy vocals of Jean Carn on Norman Connors’ album, Saturday Night Special.

Throughout his vast career, Michael Henderson has added his musical flavor to some of the greatest names in the music world, having played and recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Phyllis Hyman, Norman Connors, The Dramatics, Rena Scott, Bill Cosby, the Temptations, Cherrelle, the Four Tops, P-Funk, Buddy Miles, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, Mick Jagger, Herbie Hancock, Sugar Ray, the Jackson 5, and countless others.
