Les Violettes: Songs about love, sex & the whole damn thing

Les Violettes: Songs about love, sex & the whole damn thing

Presented by Marin Baroque at First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo

Marin Baroque presents the ensemble Les Violettes with: Corey Carleton, Soprano; Violet Grigh, Harpsichord; & Colin Shipman, Viol presenting "Songs about Love, Sex, & the whole damn thing".

Music by G.F. Handel, H. Purcell, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell & others.

Songs about their instruments, songs about home/place/belonging, songs about losing in love, songs about love and sex and songs about God/belief/final rest.

About Les Violettes: The musicians met in the Early Music School at Indiana University and have been playing together since, championing the music of Buxtehude, Purcell and the French Baroque.

They got together a couple of years ago to play Baroque, Renaissance and contemporary popular songs to see if songs from separate eras, 400 years apart, hold up when compared to each other. What they discovered is that great songwriting is great in any era, and generates new insights when curated side by side.  Old tired favorites become new favorites, and centuries-old song ideas and melodies become perceived as contemporary.
