The Kanbar Center for the Performing Arts at the Osher Marin JCC celebrates 25 years of presenting with one of their favorites Summer Nights bands and Maui Super Group; HAPA. An evening of tropical cocktails, Hawaiian dance, music & more.
This indoor concert celebrates a quarter of a century of community building through the arts, and offers the opportunity to experience a Hapa performance in the grand Hoytt Theater with a more intimate setting.
Recreating the feel of the outdoor concerts with a bit more sophistication, this event will offer Hawaiian dance performance, Hawaiian cuisine & cocktails for sale and utilize the full first floor and courtyard of the center, with bar, dining area and more. The stars of the night will be the most recognized name in Hawaiian music; HAPA. Their hypnotic, liquid guitar runs, woven around clear, tenor Hawaiian vocals and immaculate harmonies driven by poetic lyrics, exult the rapture of the Hawaiian landscape, history and mythology.
“…Hapa explore(s) the rich possibilities of Hawaiian music and then some, blending a variety of pop and world music styles.” -SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE”
This overriding quality of HAPA’s music is one of passion, beauty and serenity found in the majestic tones of the oli (chant), mele (song), and the innovative sounds of virtuoso guitar performances. If Maui were music, it would sound like HAPA. Rolling Stone Japan recently described them as “Titans of the Genre”.
The evening offers a trip to the islands without leaving the mainland with Hawaii’s hottest group!
Barry Flanagan: vocals, guitars, multi instruments
Kapono Na’ili’ili: vocals, cello, multi instruments
Tarvin Makia: vocals, bass
Joining HAPA is Shawna Kealameleku’uleialoha Alapa’i , the founder and Kumu Hula (Hula teacher) of Hula On! Productions and its adjunct dance troupe, Halau Hula Na Pua O Ka Laakea. Kuma Shawna has been involved in Hula for over 30 years, has performed internationally, and is widely known as an accomplished hula dancer, teacher and Hawaiian chant composer.
