Tom Silver Artist statement:
“We are living in pure, undiluted insanity” - Spike Lee
To me, this is a perfect description of our current reality. Everything seems to be out of order: politics, religion, the economy. When people disagree, it’s difficult to even have a rational discussion. I wake up every morning wondering “What happened last night?” “What will happen today?” It seems that each day has something more crazy than the last. I think a lot of people feel this way: Unsettled, uneasy, and CRAZY!
My new paintings represent various aspects of this new reality. The imagery of graphic novels and comic books has been a major influence. While the images in my paintings may be almost comic, they express very serious subjects. I want the paintings to be hard to look at yet draw the viewer into their stories.
I first studied painting with Joan Brown at the San Francisco Art Institute, but in my art career I have focused on sculpture, drawing and performance art. I received my MFA in Sculpture and Design from the University of Kansas.
Recently, I began painting in my Mill Valley studio.
Details of my education, teaching career and exhibitions in the United States and abroad, as well as images of my work, can be seen at my website. You can contact me at tomsilverartist@gmail.com.
