Joey Della Santina: Invisible Architecture

Presented by Mill Valley Public Library and First Tuesday ArtWalk at Mill Valley Public Library

First Tuesday Art Walk Reception:
* December 4, 5:30 – 7:30 pm

Exhibit Dates:  December 1 – 31

Artist Statement:

There are patterns and structures in everyday life that are visible only through certain mediums.

In my photographs I aim to look past conventional ideas of beauty and desire, ones prescribed in glossy magazines and social media, to find spatial and coloristic harmonies among common, everyday objects.

A chair outside an abandoned building, a palm in a vacant lobby, or a doll left on a city street might share a sense of solitude, nothingness, or even the absurd. Maybe there is a stillness that reminds the viewer of states of mind neglected in a world of digital speed.

In these photos, objects are captured in ways structured to suggest that there is beauty in the emptiness of white space and negative space, in swaths of color and darkness of shadows.

Here is a haiku by Matsuo Bashō, translated by Alan Watts:

The old pond,
A frog jumps in:
Plop!

“To know what you prefer, instead of humbly saying Amen to what the world tells you to prefer, is to have your soul kept alive.”

- Robert Louis Stevenson
