Patt Bagdon Artist Statement (excerpt)
Needle Out, incubation, evaluation, improvisation. Needle In, the work is on.
Lately I’ve enjoyed playing around with color and design. Sometimes I try to translate a feeling for a place, evoked in a fused and appliqued landscape or a memory, as with my quilt, Circus. Other times, the colors catch me and I’m moved to shape something big and colorful. Of course, I’m always a fan of a beautiful stitch.
Circus holds special weight for me. The piece was born out of my childhood recollections of the traveling circus that set up on the prairie behind my house in Goodview, Minnesota. The Catholic school closed so we could watch the circus tents go up and the entire town, even the nuns, attended to see dancers and acrobats. Vendors sold tiny chameleons with collars and leashes. At night I could hear the big cats pacing and growling in their cages.
I feel proud to be part of the tradition of American quiltmakers who for centuries have so artfully stitched a bit of themselves and their love into fabric pieces with masterful skill and passion.
