Collage artist Jean Varda (1893-1971) spent most of the last 25 years of his life on the S.S. Vallejo, an old converted ferryboat in Sausalito he acquired with fellow artist Gordon Onslow Ford.

During that time the Vallejo became a center of West Coast bohemian life.

Enjoy tales of Varda’s rich life from his birthplace in the ancient Ottoman Empire, to his life in Europe where he was at the forefront of the modernist movement consorting with artists and writers like Picasso, Matisse, Aldous Huxley, and Dylan Thomas, and his days in Big Sur and Monterey.

He finally settled in Sausalito aboard the Vallejo after World War II where he presided over a raucous, often libertine sub-culture of artists who scandalized mainstream society with their antics.

Elizabeth (Betsy) Stroman is a Sausalito writer, editor, and author of “The Art and Life of Jean Varda.” A book signing follows the talk.
