Artists' Statement
It was a special privilege and pleasure to manage the sculpture department together for 20 years at the College of Marin. Our teaching techniques and approaches varied, and so we complemented each other, offering students a choice. But while style and materials may have differed, our understanding of the essential in being an artist, and the crucial elements in teaching is very much the same. Our understanding was shaped by our shared love for our mutual friend and mentor Paul Harris.
Paul encouraged finding the sources for art-making within ourselves. He counseled us to trust and search for form in our personal stories, memory, interests and life experiences.
He taught us to be brave, embrace the complex and often difficult undertaking of making art and to never settle for obvious and external solutions. Every turn of form, every edge, every surface of a work must be taken into account. When all elements have been carefully considered and its very essence has come into being, the work of art finds its own completion and is balanced.
Through example, Paul taught the literal meaning of friendship. He wanted his friends to be friends, and so we are.
Paul died last May and his loss is profound, but our connection to him will remain.
– Rick Hall and Emily Lazarre
We dedicate this poem by Emily Dickenson and this exhibit to Paul Harris:
Each that we lose takes part of us;
A crescent still abides,
Which like the moon, some turbid night,
Is summoned by the tides.
