The Silence of Others - w/ filmmaker Robert Bahar

The Silence of Others - w/ filmmaker Robert Bahar

Presented by California Film Institute at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center

When General Franco died in 1975, after a dictatorship spanning almost 40 years, the government of Spain devised an amnesty law that freed all political prisoners…but also cleared all perpetrators of crimes on behalf of his fascist regime.

Filmed over six years, this poetic and suspenseful documentary reveals the epic struggle of hundreds of Franco’s victims to organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight the “pact of forgetting” around the crimes they suffered.

In Spain, survivors and human rights lawyers build a case that Spanish courts refuse to admit, and in Argentina, a judge takes on the case, using the principle of universal jurisdiction.

Winner of Best Feature Documentary at the Goya Awards (Spain’s Academy Awards).
