The Image Flow proudly presents Looking for the Shapes of Shadows, a solo exhibition featuring the work of photographer Nancy Richards Farese.
It felt important to soften, to look for shadows. To present an attempt at a catalogue of color and shadow—the unknown, in which the anonymity of human activity, my activity, could be laid out for comparison and response.
Photography makes the invisible visible, is the old adage. Makes visible the dance of color, swirling, always, around and around. Makes visible the depth of shadow, a dive into something familiar, yet holding a mystery that is luxurious. Makes visible transcendental notions of ease, reassurance, peace.
Because the literal is confusing, I find the abstract more tangible, more real. Strange that the sharp edges of documentary look dangerous right now – What is it? Can it be trusted? What am I supposed to think?
This work rebels against the notion that the answers are knowable, or even desirable. It wallows in a bath of ambiguity and vagueness; a chance to see color and abstraction juxtaposed with mystery and uncertainty. A quiet remove, to find myself.
