Kate Peper artist statement:

I am excited by gardens of all kinds, in whatever state of glory or disrepair. I also like contrasts and am naturally drawn to the push and pull between extreme dark and light and natural and man-made objects.

This is one of the reasons I love to paint not during the "magic hours" of early morning or evening, but at high noon, when shadows on laundry, rusted tools, or branches are at their most intense.

I have not had much formal training in watercolor, but it's been my medium of choice since childhood. Over the years I've worked at a variety of art-related jobs from graphic and rug designer to animator, and all of them have drawn upon my passion for watercolor in one way or another. And in turn, these vocations have all inspired my watercolor painting.

Painters who continue to inspire me are Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargeant, Barbara Nechis, Zoltan Szabo, and my first love, Beatrix Potter. Before I begin a painting, I frequently page through books from these artists to get inspired, and also to see how they approached more difficult problems of composition and color.

Marin has been my home now for nearly 20 years and I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by so much natural beauty, as well as an amazing array of gifted artists. When I'm not painting, I'm either hiking in the woods with my husband and Samoyed, Hannah, or writing poetry.
