Liz Brozell – Together, Alone

Liz Brozell Artist Statement:  I mix my sensory impressions of color and shape, with my memory and emotions to create each painting.

I discovered line and movement when pursuing a career as a professional ballet dancer, and these elements also infuse my work. I am self-taught, so bring an idiosyncratic style to my art. Oftentimes, my work is both intensely personal and universal.

Rachel Davis – Little Women

Rachel Davis is a mixed media artist and psychologist. This show represents a bridge between her heretofore separate lives and identities. In it, she melds asian influenced, text based abstraction with what’s been an insistent inner call to representational work. She’s pulled to what’s beneath the surface, to stories hinted at but never fully known.

“Little Women” began as an exercise in ditching detail and preciousness. One hundred days of charcoal post it portraits completed in 15 minutes or less. Rachel’s contribution to the 100 day project, a worldwide creative challenge anyone can join every year in Spring.  Within weeks, these ephemeral little things started to gather steam and momentum.  Fifteen minutes morphed into a half-hour, one hour, then two. Being drawn to inspiration shots of women, she wanted to see how much of their inner lives could be packed into a 3 x 3 inch square.

“Little Women” – consigned to tiny spaces yet demanding to be seen in full. Once the careful rendering was done, Rachel blew the post its up to actual face size and used a photo transfer technique to superimpose them onto mixed media pieces full of markmaking, text and seemingly random chaos. The resulting work simultaneously reveals and conceals more about these women, and invites the viewer to look them directly in the eye, filling in yet another story.
