Thousand Pieces of Gold – new 4K digital restoration

Presented by California Film Institute at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center

After 2 sold out shows at the Mill Valley Film Festival, the dazzling new 4K restoration of Nancy Kelly’s "Thousand Pieces of Gold" opens at the Rafael Film Center on Friday, Nov. 8.

* The filmmakers will be in person at all shows except Saturday, Nov 9, 12:45 pm.

Set in a mining town in the 1880s, Thousand Pieces of Gold portrays the real-life story of Lalu (Rosalind Chao), a young Chinese woman whose desperately poor parents sell her into slavery.

She is trafficked to a nefarious saloonkeeper in Idaho’s gold country. Eventually Charlie, a man of different ilk, played by Chris Cooper, wins her in a poker game and slowly gains her trust. Aesthetically majestic and psychologically profound, it's a story of two people who were never meant to meet each other, let alone fall in love.

New 4K digital restoration by IndieCollect under the supervision of director Nancy Kelly and producer Kenji Yamamoto.
