To bridge the gap between the world we perceive and the reality that prompts it, we engage in a process of abstraction.
Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color, tone, line, and texture to construct a composition which exists with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Abstraction creates a world made of images that express emotion, feeling, or other concepts.
Featured Marin Open Studios artists:
Gail Andersen, Isidoro Angeles, Wendy Baker, Jan Buscho, Dan Cassidy, Yuan Chen, Nick Fain, Kirsten Gamble, Elizabeth Geisler, Teddie Hathaway, Linda Larsen, Nini Lion, Gloria Matuszewski, Ning Mercer, Nance Miller, Kalman Muller, Sharon Paster, Cathy Richardi, Ellen Rothman, Deborah Saidman, Julia Spaulding, Stephanie Thwaites, Bette Trono, Paula Valenzuela, Elizabeth Wayman, Sue Weil, & Arlene Whiting
Artwork which derives from, but does not imitate a recognizable subject, is called non-objective abstraction. What draws us to enjoy a piece of art is different for everyone, but non-objective abstract art tends to have a universal and timeless appeal.
The beauty of non-objective work is that it is up to us to give it our own interpretation. It does not require the viewer to have a personal relationship with the subject, so it attracts a broader audience over many generations.
Non-objective abstract art is an ideal mode to express the inner necessity of an artist and to convey universal human emotions and ideas. We use abstraction to bridge the gap and meaningfully explore elements & ideas.
