Pixels & Artists: El Reina
THURSDAY, JANUARY 9 – 6:30 pm
SATURDAY, JANUARY 11 – 1:00 pm

Digital version presents “Pixels & Artists: El Raina,” a documentary about the extraordinary Reina Sofía National Museum of Art. Revered, admired, and contemplated, El Reina is like an immense living being and the documentary presented, tries to breathe with that living being in a place where you can hear the emotion of artists and their works, of restaurateurs, of visitors, of illustrious names of Spanish art such as Cristina Iglesias, Antonio López, Isidoro Valcárcel, Antoni Miralda, Luis Gordillo, Pedro Almodóvar or Manuel Borja Villel; and of wise and meditative anonymous characters who spend hours deciphering the inner workings of that gigantic living being whose name is engraved on the door: Reina Sofía National Museum of Art.

This documentary includes more than two hundred works by authors such as Pablo Picasso, Ángeles Santos, Salvador Dalí, Dora Maar, Joan Mira, Maria Blanchard, Juan Gris, Mark Rothko or Francis Bacon, shown as never before in a documentary. And among those works, the museum’s key piece, the great icon of the twentieth century: Guernica, by Pablo.

In El Reina a clarinetist dialogues with El Guernica. And a cultural mediator with Un mundo de Ángeles Santos, and Luis Gordillo with the caretaker of his room, of his paintings. A film, La concha y el reverendo by Germaine Dulac, is projected on the wall, a powerful work that declares she was the first surrealist filmmaker in history, a year before Buñuel made universal An Andalusian dog. El Raina is a complex film with characters that roam the halls of the museum looking for a story that tells them about themselves.

Jesús López Cobos and the Young National Orchestra of Spain concentrate for several days to rehearse the Four Beethoven Symphonies. Rehearsals become master classes for young musicians and the starting point of a trip that introduces us to the essential aspects of his life.

This film followed his rehearsals and concerts with various orchestras in 2011, always performing authentic masterpieces of classical music.

Through his work and intense conversations in Toro, Málaga, Madrid, Valladolid, Lausanne, Berlin or Vienna; he conveys his serene, subtle and passionate way of being in love with music; the same with which he knew how to live life.
