LOCAL>> Tuvan Throat Singing Workshop #3: Sygyt, with Enrique Ugalde

Presented by Strawberry Hill Music at Streaming Arts

In this series of Zoom workshops, you will learn the three main techniques of Tuvan style throat singing: Kargyraa, Khöömei and Sygyt, additional sub styles and their cultural significance, Shamanic contexts and application in traditional Tuvan folk music as well as Buddhist meditation.

We will also be learning about the mechanics and theory of overtone singing. We will also discuss the land and culture from where this visceral and spiritual singing craft sprung from. There will be brief language study and we will learn and sing ancient traditional songs and melodies passed down through the centuries from master to student of this beautiful and endangered culture.

Enrique Ugalde has over 15 years of teaching experience and has sung Tuvan style throat singing (Khöoömei) since 1998. Inspired by a live performance of Throat Singing Masters, Huun Huur Tu, he has gone on to tour the world with his own project SORIAH and has traveled to the Central Asian Republic of Tuva 13 times to perform, collaborate and compete as a Khöömeigie.

He won 3rd place in the 2008 Throat Singing Symposium in Tuva, the highest ranking of any non-Tuvan in the Symposium’s history. He also won "Best Foreigner" at the 2008 Ustuu-Khuree Festival in Chadanaa Tuva. In 2014, he won 2nd place in the Tuvan Nation Kargyraa Competition. In 2016, he was recognized as the "Great Innovator of the Art of Tuvan Throat Singing", and in 2019 won for “Best Kargyraa Performance” at the Khöömei in the Center of Asia International Competition in Kyzyl, Tuva, and in August 2020 was awarded the title “Foreign Wizard of Khöömei”.
