LOCAL>> Writing Directors' Lives: Capra · Ford · Spielberg

Presented by California Film Institute at Streaming Arts

In this entertaining and informative show, critic and historian Joseph McBride will recount stories involving his own “adventures” in writing.

Among McBride’s 21 books are award-winning biographies of iconic American filmmakers. His 1992 biography Frank Capra: The Catastrophe of Success was described by The New York Times Book Review as “Masterly, comprehensive, and frequently surprising.”

What readers did not know then was how arduous it was to reveal the hidden truth about this iconic American figure. While McBride was researching and writing for more than seven years, he was fighting a pitched legal battle with his original publisher and allies of the celebrated film director. Last year, McBride published Frankly: Unmasking Frank Capra, his revealing account of that Kafkaesque but ultimately successful struggle.

McBride’s 21 books also include Searching for John Ford and Steven Spielberg: A Biography, and he will discuss the process of sorting out fact from legend in the lives of great film directors.

Joseph McBride is an internationally renowned film historian and biographer. His twenty-one books also include the interview book Hawks on Hawks, three books on Orson Welles, and a critical study of Ernst Lubitsch. He is currently working on a critical study of Billy Wilder. McBride is a professor in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University.
