LOCAL>> Nora Harlow and Saxon Holt – Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates

Presented by Marin Art & Garden Center at Streaming Arts

Regions defined by arid summers and soggy winters can be challenging for even the most experienced gardener.

Summers are mostly dry, but how dry and for how long?

Winters are usually wet, but what about infrequent heavy rainstorms?

Do winter temperatures drop below freezing?

All these questions and what to do about them are answered in Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates, from landscape architect Nora Harlow and award-winning photographer Saxon Holt.

Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates is the definitive handbook on the plants and practices needed to create a thriving summer-dry landscape. A comprehensive plant directory provides details on each plant’s needs, and stunning photography shows how smart design can help address seasonal issues. Harlow and Holt  also explain how plants adapt to the climate, how topography and climate relate, and how best to work with these conditions.

At its core, Gardening in Summer-Dry Climates encourages gardeners to understand and work in harmony with their region. By choosing naturally occurring, climate-appropriate plants, gardeners can promote healthier ecosystems and make a difference from their own backyards.

Working with rather than against the summer dry climate means reducing impact on water supplies and creating spaces that attract and sustain wildlife. It means taking a step back, letting nature assert itself in the garden, and welcoming in the unique wildness of these special regions.

Saxon has been a frequent visitor to Marin Art and Garden Center, both in his work as a photojournalist and as a photography instructor. He has generously granted permission for us to use his photography of Marin Art and Garden Center over the years for us to use on this website and in our publications. See this Q&A with Saxon.
