Peter Adamyan Artist Statement:
In this exhibition I want to show what overextraction of resources and commodification of land looks like in the extreme of a materialistic society. Reminding the viewer that we decide how we treat the land, we can kill to claim ownership of it for our nation, we can destroy it in a desire for profits, but no matter what we do, it is temporary.
The planet will wait for us to destroy ourselves or evolve to cherish it, as the land will continue in one form or another because the past 10,000 years of human civilization is mere seconds in geological time. This Land Is Land is about giving ownership of land to itself.
Peter Adamyan is the 2020–2021 Max Thelen Studio Resident Artist. The Fenwick Foundation generously funds the program in commemoration of Max Thelen Jr. The residency aims to support emerging artists by providing free studio space, exhibition opportunity, and exposure to the public for one year.
