Mark Richardson Artist Statement:
It’s quite a messy process of making, and in creation the work takes on a life of its own.  Its voice guides my hand and make demands.  When a feeling of completion descends, I stop.

The names for my work describe an after-the-fact attempt to describe where it came from, the inner ecologies.  Music from the jazz world, such as “Dance of the Infidels” by Bud Powell, are central to my inside world.  The natural world is represented by pieces such as “Phototropism," while feeling states such as “Hope Quilt” and “Fragile” are emotions I visit from time to time.

The work has to live somewhere, like a sunflower in the garden or gnarly bonsai on the deck.  It needs air and space and humility, and so tends to be small.

For me, art is a touchstone of joy and freedom, a balm to the craziness of this world.  Making it helps me a great deal, and I love to share it with you!
