I started my gallery in a tiny space, in a former bathroom on the 4th floor at 49 Geary Street in San Francisco in 2002, and I grew accustomed to filling the small space with curiously wonderful small pieces. I opened the gallery in order to show the work of self- taught artists alongside the work of schooled artists. I embarked on this road in order to fill what seemed an aching need in the art world. I wanted to exhibit the hand and mind of the artist, be they an MFA with a long exhibition history, or a self-taught artisan happily and compulsively making work without the hunt for the masterpiece/sale. But most importantly, I wanted to show both types of artists and their works at the same time, without prejudice.
Thank you for the honor of being asked a second time to curate this show. My thanks go mostly out to all the artists who worked so hard to make heartfelt pieces. I truly loved curating this show and seeing the wide variety of works that were submitted. Being privy to the efforts that were made by all of you was really a humbling event.
