Marin County has a unique relationship with Quetzaltenango, Guatemala – families, art and culture connect the two regions. This exhibit with the support of the local Guatemalan community demonstrates the value of building bridges of understanding, education and opportunity with respect and unity.
Barbara McVeigh journeyed to Guatemala’s mountain region Quetzaltenango in 2018 following the border violence in order to understand first hand the plight of immigrants.
She lived with the extended family of Marin County immigrant resident Gaby Mazariegos learning their stories and understanding their aspirations. Barbara returned to Quetzaltenango with Gaby Mazariegos in the summer of 2021 to share a mutual dream of hope and prosperity. Gaby had not seen her mother in Guatemala for over twenty years.
"Guatemala is a hidden gem, filled with art, weaving, traditional farming practices and generous collaborative communities who share what they have. We can learn culture, resilience and joy. The villagers of Quetzaltenango are our teachers.” - Barbara McVeigh says.
