Fiber Art: the Expressive and Innovative

An exhibition of art works utilizing all fiber techniques such as knitted, tied, woven, stitched, felted, and cloth constructions.

We invited artists exploring contemporary fiber art involving fiber, materials and processes that incorporate art making approaches in constructed surfaces, sculpture, installation and interactive works. What is new and exciting in this field of art emerges in areas of process and subject, including personal, political and social/cultural contexts. Ancient fiber techniques may merge with newer technology making known an artist's expressive ideas exploring the field's innovative nature.

JUROR:  Carole Beadle is a fiber sculpture artist who pioneered flax paper, crocheted and knitted wire, and patterning techniques for three-dimensional fabric forms. After completing CCA’s first-ever MFA in textiles under the tutelage of the famed Trude Guermonprez in 1968, Carole Beadle went on to found and teach fiber construction and fiber sculpture classes as part of CCA’s program. Although Carole first studied painting then ceramics, she started out in the textile industry designing woven fabrics. She studied textiles in Sweden for a year and then with a Fulbright scholarship studied in Norway for another year.  When she took up weaving, she quickly moved towards off-loom construction—particularly three-dimensional felt work—which was emerging at that time as revolutionary. Indeed, she is often cited as “a felt-making pioneer.” Beadle’s work has been shown in numerous one-person and group exhibitions and she continues an active making practice to this day. Carole has taught Fiber Sculpture Art at the Collage of Marin for 34 years.

Contemporary, expressionistic, abstract, exploratory, and/or experimental entries encouraged.  O’Hanlon Center for the Arts emphasizes the creative process and the continued pursuit of meaning and authenticity through observation, exploration, and experimentation.
