Headlands’ Project Space Studio hosts artist Andreas Johansson through August 28
Exhibition Dates:
* July 31 – August 28
Artist Andreas Johansson grew up skateboarding in a small town in southern Sweden. He and his friends re-imagined their rural streets as the curbs and rails of Los Angeles, mentally editing their surroundings to fit their perception of skater culture.
This notion of the edited landscape carries through Johansson’s work, in which he meticulously assembles photographic images of abandoned or derelict urban spaces into three-dimensional collages, ranging in scale from the handheld to the immersive.
These illusory spaces of overgrown concrete, graffiti-adorned walls, and abandoned vehicles represent imaginary worlds beyond reality.
With his Project Space Residency, Johansson will, for the first time, find himself in the California landscape he has long imagined in his work, opening up new possible lines to ride.
