The Return of the Western Monarch Butterfly combines science and art, in an exhibition of documentary photographer Elizabeth Weber’s photographs of monarchs and the plants they need to survive and sharing the actions of local community members working to protect this endangered butterfly.

Monarchs are categorized as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to habitat loss, overuse of pesticides and climate change.

Weber uses black and white photographic prints on white vellum paper and adds gold leaf to the images, suggesting the fragility of the monarchs, and a call to remember their plight as they near extinction.

Exhibition educational materials are curated by Audrey Fusco of Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN), Mia Monroe, volunteer with Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, and Ole Schell of West Marin Monarch Sanctuary.
