Inside Guernica - Then and Now

Presented by The Museum of International Propaganda at The Museum of International Propaganda

The Museum of International Propaganda is proud to present an addition to its collection of 20th Century Art & Propaganda:

An Original Reproduction of Picasso's Guernica, in honor of the 80th anniversary of its completion on June 4th, 1937.

Join us for a reception for the artist/curator Patrick Gannon on Thursday, October 26th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Presentation by the artist at 7:30 pm.

The show, including the secondary pictures, curator's statement, and the painting will be on exhibit until Dec. 15.  The painting will then remain in the museum's permanent collection.

Excerpts from Curator's Statement:

"...The inspiration for this artistic masterpiece was the bombing and destruction of the Spanish town of Guernica on April 26th, 1937 by Nazi and Italian warplanes.

Picasso was horrified by the brutality of the bombing that killed and injured over 2500 people, many of them women and children. His outrage fueled an intense month-long effort to express his protest by painting an enormous (11.5 ft. x 25.5 ft.) mural using images and symbols drawn from prior work and painted in a Cubist/Surrealist style using a monochromatic palette. Guernica is both art and propaganda. ...

Guernica is seen by historians as the most important painting of the 20th Century both for its artistic conceptualization and social and political content. Although inspired by a particular event, Picasso chose imagery that evoked universal themes common to all humanity when faced with tyranny and death. ...

The universal themes represented by Guernica have chilling political relevance in today’s turbulent world. Images and symbols contained in the painting offer uncanny references to current developments dividing our world. ...

Then and now, Guernica's message remains the same: resist authoritarianism and light the path to a better world."
