UPTAKE Culture Feed is a digital, mobile-friendly platform that empowers Marin County readers to engage with local visual arts, performing arts, music, and literature, as well as the creative process. UPTAKE fuels the appetite for culture and deepens understanding of the local cultural opportunities featured on the MarinArts website

UPTAKE does not accept pre-written articles. However, we do welcome proposals for stories written for a general arts audience that fit within our mission and guidelines. Please email your story proposal of 100 words or less, along with your bio, and links to related writing samples to editor@marinarts.org.
UPTAKE is written for a general arts audience in a friendly, interpretive and educational tone. UPTAKE’s online magazine provides context for events on MarinArts and the wider creative community.
We look for strong scenes that hook the reader and a nut graph that is clear. We want features with at least three interview sources that provide a balanced point of view. In addition, please use active verbs, create a story structure that flows, and use details from your reporting to tell the story.
Once your pitch is accepted and your story is assigned, please review the following guidelines prior to submitting your story:
Word Count: Final word count is limited to 1,000 words. Shorter is better. Subheads are recommended, especially in articles longer than 500 words. Please provide links to any relevant websites, video, or audio content you reference.
Vocabulary: We are okay with the use of industry-specific vocabulary and acronyms as long as the language is defined in the same sentence. Please avoid jargon or buzzwords.
Fact Checking: Please provide the contact information for your three main sources as well as links to additional online resources used for reporting when filing your story.
Ethics: We don’t accept articles whose primary purpose is to promote a specific event, organization, or venue. We cannot accept stories where there is a conflict of interest with the subject or any of the sources in the story; all personal relationships related to the story need to be fully disclosed.
Bio: Please also include your brief bio of 50 words or less, with a contact link, such as link to social media, website and email address. Please provide an author’s headshot, (JPG file, minimum 350K).
Images: Please submit images you collect to illustrate your article with photo credits and captions that identify artwork (title, medium, date, size), locations, and individuals pictured. (JPG file, minimum of 1 MB).
MarinArts retains final editorial discretion on copy and line edits for all published articles. We use the AP Style Guide and abide by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.
