A creative writing workshop with Rachael Richardson, hosted by Dominican University of CA.
Story and Song: Finding Direction and Momentum in the Music of our Words

Sometimes it’s a slog to write a scene, and sometimes a poem just feels flat.
Tuning our ears to language can often break us out of old ruts and help us find new possibility in our writing. In this workshop, we’ll look closely at the *sound* of the language were using, and the musical and rhythmic devices we can lean into to enliven our prose and poetry, amplify meaning, even find where we need to go.
We’ll try a few techniques together and you’ll leave with several more in your toolbox.
Rachel Richardson is the author of two previous books of poems, Copperhead and Hundred-Year Wave (Carnegie Mellon University Press), and a forthcoming collection, SMOTHER.
She is co-founder of the Berkeley literary center Left Margin LIT and serves as Poetry Advisor for the Bay Area Book Festival. Her poetry and prose have appeared in the New York Times, Yale Review, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere.
